Nurses Strike Nightmare, Patients Turned Away From Public Hospitals

It’s yet another nightmare for patients seeking treatment from different health facilities in Kenya where a countrywide nurses strike continues to take its toll.

The strike that officially started on the 5th of June is a reminder of the suffering that patients were subjected to for 100 days when doctors went on strike in December.

Currently patients have been turned away from different public health hospitals as a result of the striking nurses.
Patients at the Meru Referral hospital were transferred to other facilities as nurses at the facility joined the strike.

Other patients were still lying helplessly on the beds holding onto hope that nurses would resume duty and attend to them.

The nursing manager at the facility Esther Muthee says that some relatives took their patients home.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses, maintains that the strike will continue until such a time when the Collective Bargaining Agreement is signed and implemented.
